Cleveland - A meteor was seen across parts of nine states Friday night.

Many reports were made to the American Meteor Society from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and southern Ontario, Canada.

Basically they released info that we had a 30% chance to collide with what they are calling an asteroid (pics look more like a planetoid) sometime near the end of December to early January.

California Fireball Meteor Reports 17 Oct 2012 (VIDEO)

Sightings of a fireball streaking through the sky have been reported this evening up and down the Central Valley and in the Bay Area.

"We've had a lot of calls about people who have seen a big fireball," said Stefanie Henry, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento. "The speculation is that it's part of the Orionid meteor shower that peaks about Oct. 21."

Something Shakes Northwest Louisiana! Meteorite?

Northwest Louisiana authorities are investigating the source of whatever shook people's residences and businesses about 11:40 p.m. Monday.

The Webster sheriff's office now is entertaining the possibility that it may have been a meteorite, possibly in the Dixie Inn area. There have been a large number of reports stating that they saw something come down instead of something blow up, a spokesman said.

On June 30, 1908, in a remote part of Russia, a fireball was seen streaking across the daytime sky. 


Within moments, something exploded in the atmosphere above Siberia’s Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. 


This event – now widely known as the Tunguska event – is believed to have been caused by an incoming meteor or comet, which never actually struck Earth but instead exploded in the atmosphere, causing what is known as an air burst, three to six miles (5–10 kilometers) above Earth’s surface.

Asteroid 2012 TC4 will makes close flyby of Earth

Another recent find, asteroid 2012 TC4, will come closer on the night of Oct. 11-12. At 11:57 p.m. (CDT) Oct. 11, the speedy visitor will book across the sky 59,000 miles from Earth’s surface. 

Because of its small size – about 45 to 90 feet across – it will appear as a very faint, fast-moving star in large amateur telescopes at that time.

The rock’s closest approach to the planet is scheduled for February 15, 2013, when the distance between the planet and space wanderer will be under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is lower than the geosynchronous orbit kept by the Google Maps satellite.

People across the UK have reported seeing a large meteor shooting across the night sky.

It was seen breaking up into pieces last night, with sightings reported across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report the sightings, posting photos and video.

Many people described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
